Most authorities agree on that it means “Bear spear” and comes from Gothic. In the Dark Ages after the fall of Rome and before the Middle Ages of the Holy Roman Empire, Germanic languages formed a continuum, much like what can be observed even now in Slavic languages. The adoption of Gothic names across all the spectrum of Germanic languages is a remarkable example of that feature.
There is however another name which means “Glorious Spear”, which is of course “Roger”, Hrothgar in Anglo-Saxon and Roðgeirr in Old Icelandic. Other forms are Rutiger (German), Rutger (Dutch).
