What does the name Chloe mean?

The meaning of the name “Chloe” is: “Verdent and blooming”.

Additional information: Chloe (which is also written as Chloe, without the accent), is a Greek name meaning ‘young, green shoot, of a plant, grass or corn, early foliage of trees’, and was another name for the harvest goddess Demeter in Greek mythology. Chloe is also mentioned in the Bible, and because of this the name was adopted in the seventeenth century by the Puritans.

Chloe also has a long history in the classical bucolic/pastoral literary tradition. It was the name of one of the main characters in the Greek pastoral romance 'Daphnis and Chloe', written by the Lesbian (from the island of Lesbos) author Longus probably around the end of the second century AD.

The name has a lot of Western European variants, including Chloé and Cloé in France, Khloë and Chloë in Germany, and Cloe in Italy and Spain. The spelling ‘Khloe’ has seen an increase in popularity since 2010, most likely brought about by the popularity of the Kardashians. Other spellings for Chloe are Chloie, Chloey, Khloei, Kloe and Kloey. The name Chloe is also sometimes paired with other names to make a double barrelled name, such as Chloe-Anne and Chloe-Marie. People associate Chloe with other ‘older’ names from late nineteenth century literature, like Emma, Charlotte, Jane, or Alice. The most common nicknames for Chloe are ‘Chlo’ or ‘Clo’, and Chloe is sometimes misspelled as ‘Chole’.

In the USA, Chloe saw moderate popularity from 1880 into the 1940s, but it wasn’t until the 2000s that the name Chloe saw frequent use, becoming the ninth most popular name in 2009 and 2010. In the UK Chloe has been riding high in the charts for several years; it dropped to number 7 in 2007.

Chloë Grace Moretz, who took on the title role in Carrie in its most recent remake, is one example of a celebrity named Chloe. Other examples are Chloe Bridges (actress), Chloë Agnew (the youngest member of Celtic Women), and Chloe Rogers (Olympic bronze medallist in hockey). Also, Chloe O'Brian was a character  on  the popular US television show, "24".

Myrtles Plantation in Louisiana is touted as one of the USA’s most haunted houses, and is supposedly home to a ghost named Chloe. The legend goes that she was a slave owned by the Woodruff family, and had her ear cut off because she listened in at keyholes. After this, she wore a green turban to cover her injury, and it is reported that a ghost wearing this turban haunts the plantation still.
