Kia ora, I’m from New Zealand and I’m Maori and cook island, my partner is also Maori (from Tehauke) My son’s name is Kahukura, I chose this name because he is a little miracle who was protected in my puku (tummy) when he was born he had his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and tied in two knots, leaving the doctors baffled as to how he survived and grew inside me. (the knots in his cord meant he couldn’t receive food but he still grew as if he did, the type of knots meant he was still able to do flips in my puku so it was around 20 weeks he knotted his cord). We chose to name our son Kahukura because the God who watched over and protected Takitimu waka was Kahukura-nui, Takitimu waka left Rarotonga in the Cook islands (where i’m from) and migrated to New Zealand to TeHauke (where my partner is from,) we named him as a notion of gratitude to our atua and ancestors for protecting our baby, Also the native/endemic New Zealand butterfly is called Kahukura, they are red and black, they were named this because the chief Kahukura who wore a red and black korowai so it means red cloak aswell. Kahukura is also the name of the atua of rainbows, this reflects my babys beautiful nature. So many depths to this, I could go on and on, but one thing I will say is the words mean one thing but the context in which its used changes all the meaning, and almost always has a deeper metaphorical meaning especially in Maori.
