Kam’Au was also what the people of Kemet called themselves. As currently used, it is found in many Kenyan nationalities as a “root” name, like Maina, ie a name which has always been known as a name and not a description. It is found among the Kalenjin, Luo, Luhya Gikuyu, Embu, Meru, Kuria, Kisii and other nationalities. It is said that originally, so many people were called Kamau that descriptions were tagged to identify a particular Kamau. is it the tall Kamau (Muraya)? The short one (Mukuhi)? the bald headed (Kihara)? The limping one (Gathua, Githua)? The huge one (Munene)? The farmer (Karimi)? Then, as grandhchildren were named, the kamau would be dropped and these other names gained ascendance.
