It’s pretty clear when the popularity of the name spiked in the late 80s and early 90s. The character Kayla of Days of our Lives, a soap opera, was important. And that’s when a lot of Kaylas were born!

I use to hate my name because I was the only Kayla in the whole school and I felt left out. I wanted to be a Sarah or a Danielle. Then another Kayla started school with me less than a year older than me and I felt so happy that I wasn’t alone. I look on Facebook now and there are so many Kayla’s with not only my first but my last name HENRY 🙁
Kayla of course

Does anyone else have their name constantly mispronounced? In Canada everyone who sees it written calls me Kai-la. It’s very frustrating!! Since when did Kay sound like Kai??

I’m still pretty young. Back in elementary school, my name was pretty common. I was in a class with another Kayla. I though my mom just picked it. She didn’t even know the meaning. The name always stuck with her before I was even a thought. But she feels that the meaning couldn’t be more fitting. She believes the name was given to her by God because she didn’t even know the meaning, yet it is so fitting in her eyes. I love my name. 1 thing I never understood, however, was how my new teachers every year up until 5th grade would call me Kyla… There is is an A between the K and the Y people.

I have been told that in India, Kayla (maybe not the same spelling) means banana! And also, being born in 1990 I grew up with several Kayla’s though have always been thankful my mother added the “H” at the end. Actually a lot of teachers called me simply “H” because there was so many Kayla’s! However, due to the lower case “h” a lot of people also thought my name was “kaylan” which was weird ,and have too been asked if this was short for Mikayla….my father’s name is Michael so maybe this is what sparked the interest in my name?

I am 61 and had gone all my life being the ONLY Kayla in school for 12 years. I had a teacher tell be I was misspelling my own name , it must be Karla. I didn’t need a last name, everyone knew me. In the 80’s it came to life thanks to a soap opera. Hated it as a child but now I miss being different. And yes I do think parents have gone crazy with it. Just like they did with Stefnie, Debbie, etc back then. Oh, by the way, I grew up with a cousin. .Gayla a year younger, same school. That was confusing. Fact is your nsme doesn’t identify who you are, you do. Enjoy!!!!

My name is Kayla as well. I get compliments on it all the time and think it works just fine for a child or an adult. Also I don’t know/haven’t met an overwhelming number of other girls named Kayla. Not nearly as over used as more traditional names.

To the Kayla that wrote, “the name is horribly overused” you need to understand that by saying that parents that name there children Kayla, that by saying that you are offending your own parents. So I’m sorry you don’t like your name but get the hell over it!!?

This name is horribly overused. Can’t wait to change my name. Sick of sharing it with 3 other girls in every class. Parents need to consider their kids when choosing a name, seriously. This name is goofy on an adult.

How is a name “goofy” on a person? Its a perfectly fine name. AND it’s just that: a name. That’s like saying these pants look goofy on me or this hat makes my shoulders look broad??!? It’s just a name. Don’t give it so much power, silly. That would be goofy.

I’m with you on that, another Kayla here. I’ve always had to correct people because they think I’m “Kylie” or “Mikayla.” On top of that, I’ve shared this name in a class with two other girls plus two “Mikaylas” and a “Caleb.” Add the Kaylee, Kaylyn, Layla, Ayla, and Shaylas I know too. Let this name die, JESUS.
